‘Keep calm and carry on.’

Can you imagine the Brits saying this when the rains come again.

‘Keep calm and carry on.’

Can you imagine the Queen saying that on a bad day.

‘Keep calm and carry on.’

Can you imagine what the British will be eating for breakfast this celebratory weekend?

Before watching ‘The King’s Speech’ I had never considered the Queen as anything other then her title.

Can you imagine her ever watching Monty Python and laughing as hard at the crazy humor as the rolling folks in the quiet English streets were?

Or sitting down and thinking I just don’t feel like wearing a hat today?

Or her personal views on the many rulers whose hands she has shaken and time spent in her presence.

With all these questions about her its clear the British monarchy still rule the royal world and this weekend marks 60 years since Elizabeth ascended the throne and became Queen.

The jeweled crown and responsibility that comes with it.

Thousands of days and decades of years have passed.

With this anniversary and the impact of the British way of life on our world I decided to tackle a recipe I found quite a daunting thought to complete.

I spent more then one minute for every year of her time on the throne cooking these and found through trial and error that they were not too difficult a thing to make.

Note: Traditional crumpets have holes in them and are only cooked on one side, however, if you feel that you want to cook the other side then do so as this is what the original recipe calls for.

Crumpets
Recipe taken from: BBC – Homemade Crumpets
Makes 18

Ingredients:
450g flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoons instant yeast
300ml milk, warmed
300ml water, warmed
Metal rings

Directions:
Place the flour and salt in a bowl. Stir in the sugar and yeast while making a well in the centre. Pour in the warmed water and milk until it is well combined and a smooth mixture.

Cover and put in a warm place for an hour. It will then be a bubbly, light mixture.

Heat a frying pan on low heat and swipe a dab of oil across the entire surface so that its very light.

Place the greased metal rings in the frying pan and allow to heat up for a few minutes.

Pour the mixture to half way up the rings. You want the crumpets to be about a 1/4” thick. Allow to cook on low heat for 8 to 10 minutes.

Set aside as you continue the same process with the remaining mixture.

Serve warm with butter.
