Notes

  • Difference between apple crumble and apple crisp: The main difference lies in the topping. While both desserts feature baked apples, an apple crisp typically has a topping made with oats, butter, sugar, and spices. On the other hand, an apple crumble has a more streusel-like topping made with flour, butter, sugar, and sometimes nuts. The use of oats in the crisp topping gives it a slightly chewy texture, while the crumble topping is typically more crumbly and buttery.
  • Best apples for the crisp: The best apples for Apple Crisp are those that hold their shape and offer a balance of sweet and tart flavors. Popular choices include Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn apples.
  • Best way to serve: Apple Crisp is delightful on its own, but it's even better when served with a drizzle of custard, scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. The cold and creamy texture complements the warm and tender apple filling perfectly.
  • You can freeze the crisp: Once baked and cooled, portion it into individual servings or in a freezer-safe container. Label and freeze for up to 3 months. To enjoy, thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat in the oven until warmed through.
  • Making this gluten free: You can easily make a gluten-free Apple Crisp by using gluten-free oats and a gluten-free flour blend in the crumble topping.
  • Make ahead: Prepare the recipe as instructed but hold off on baking it. Cover and refrigerate the unbaked Apple Crisp for up to 24 hours. When ready to serve, bake it according to the recipe's instructions.
  • Baking dish: The baking dish used here is 24.5x17 cm / 9.5x6.5 inches which is small to medium sized.
