    What is Apple Crisp?

Apple Crisp is a classic dessert made with baked apples topped with a sweet and buttery crumble topping. It's a comforting and delicious treat that combines the flavors of tender apples, warm cinnamon, and a crispy topping.

Ingredients and substitutions for Apple Crisp

    • Apples: The apples used here were a mixture of ones I had picked and Granny Smith apples, meaning a variety of sizes and the fact the flesh browned quicker than store bought. If you cannot pick your apples, it is recommended to use either Granny Smith or Royal Gala. These apples have a firm texture that hold their shape during baking and a slight sweetness which requires less added sugar.
    • Sugar: The brown sugar helps not only add sweetness to our apples, but also draws the liquid from the apples creating a nice soft texture within.
    • Flour: Plain or all purpose flour is best for a nice light texture.
    • Oats: Simple rolled oats are used, though you could replace with quick oats or steel oats which will result in a different texture but likely still taste great in the crumble.
    • Butter: Unsalted butter was used here, though salted butter would also work if thatโ€™s what you have on hand and softened will help you create that crumble texture. You could substitute in equal measure with vegan butter, if you prefer.
    • Desiccated coconut: Alongside our oats, the coconut creates the rough crumble texture and adds a complimentary flavor. You could omit and replace with oats completely, if you prefer.
    • Spices: Ground cinnamon mixed through the apples infuses them with the full beloved flavor. Whilst the ground nutmeg adds a complimentary warmth to the crisp topping. You could replace or add a little ground allspice or star anise, if you prefer.
